Chittagong, Bangladesh, recently faced a "massive" backlog of outbound containers due to a week-long factory shutdown during the Eid holiday. In particular, trucks are lining up in front of 19 inland container yards in Chittagong ahead of Eid al-Adha, the second largest Muslim holiday, on Tuesday.

Garage workers and drivers began celebrating the religious holiday in the early hours of the morning, while about 1.000 trucks loaded with outbound goods were waiting to be unloaded. The trucks carried a total of about 14.000 TEUs of export cargo, more than double the yard's usual capacity of about 6.000 TEUs.

Ruhul Amin Sikder, secretary general of the Bangladesh Inland Container Yards Association, said the backlog was caused by exporters moving large quantities of goods to warehouses before the factories were closed. He added that in the run-up to Eid, the warehouse received 33% more trucks per day, but there was a serious backlog as the number of ships did not change during the period. Sikder hopes the congestion will ease soon as business resumes.

In addition, according to the yard, there are nearly 50.000 empty containers waiting to be used in the yard.

Chittagong has been struggling with congestion and last week the government appointed IFC as a deal adviser to study, design and negotiate with foreign companies to build a new container terminal. The terminal is planned to be 450 meters long with a berth depth of 10.5 meters, and APM Terminals is proposing to invest $400 million to build this new facility.
