On July 19. local time, a container ship "Maersk Frankfurt" owned by Maersk caught fire in the Arabian Sea, near Karwal, India.

According to the latest news from the media and the India Coast Guard (ICG): the fire on the container ship has been going on for three days. Fire extinguishing operations are ongoing.

After the ship was delivered at a shipyard in Japan in May this year, it called at several domestic ports in June:

It will call at Tianjin Port from June 3rd to 4th, Dalian Port from June 5th to 6th, Ningbo Port from June 13th to 15th, Qingdao Port from June 16th to 19th, and then to Malaysia Port and then to India and Pakistan ports.

According to Manoj Bhatia, Deputy Director General of the India Coast Guard Goa, "Although the fire is under control, I dare not say that it has been completely extinguished. He added that it could take another day or two to fully extinguish the fire. Even if it was extinguished, it was still hot in the area. We have to keep an eye on it," Bhatia said.

It is reported that the fire has abated somewhat, but the smoke remains, masking the fire and making it difficult to extinguish the fire. The fire has spread to the starboard side of the vessel, particularly affecting containers stacked on the lower decks.

According to reports, the ship was carrying some dangerous goods cargo, but Maersk has not confirmed this detail.

The ship was sailing from Mundra to Colombo at the time of the incident, with a total crew of 21 on board, one of whom was reported to have died in the accident.

Maersk confirmed the situation in its latest statement on social media, "With the support of the India Coast Guard, the firefighting efforts continue." The ship is reported to be in stable condition. However, it is deeply regrettable that the ship's management has confirmed that one crew member has died. The rest of the crew are safe and sound.

It is reported that the "Maersk Frankfurt" is a 225-meter-long new-build container ship, which will be delivered in 2024 with a capacity of 5920 TEU and registered in Panama.

The vessel departed from Mundra, India, on July 17 and was scheduled to arrive in Colombo, Sri Lanka on July 21. This means that the ship has not yet completed its first full cycle mission, which was a fire accident on its maiden voyage.

Forwarders and shippers who have cargo stowage on the vessel should pay attention to the damage to the cargo and the delay of the shipment.
