No matter the forwarder or the owner, must have encountered the situation of shipping delay, so why the shipping delay? Before taking stock of the reasons for the delay, let's first understand what is a shipping date ~

The shipping schedule is the arrangement plan for the use of the ship by the shipping company. Simply put, it is the time arrangement of what type of ship from the port of departure to the port of destination, which can also be said to be the time of shipping goods.

What important information does the shipping date contain?

01. Voyage, sailing date and other time information

Voyage is the time it takes for a ship to travel from the port of departure (POL) to the port of destination (POD).

Sailing date, as the name implies, is the date on which the shipping company sets sail. The sailing date in the shipping schedule is usually expressed from Monday to Sunday. For example, "shipping schedule 135th" means that there are ships every Monday, every Wednesday and every Friday.

02. direct flight/transfer

Direct sailing: the ship

will call at many ports, but as long as the container is not unloaded during the voyage, it is a direct sailing ship. Generally speaking, the sailing schedule of the direct sailing ship is relatively stable, and the arrival time is close to the expected arrival time under normal circumstances.

Transshipment: containers will be changed at the transshipment port during the voyage. Due to the loading and unloading efficiency of the transshipment terminal and the shipping schedule of the large ship in the back, the shipping schedule of containers that need transshipment is usually not stable.

03. Port of call

Port of call refers to the port of call on the way from the port of departure to the port of destination, also known as port of call. Suppose that the shipment from Shanghai port to Los Angeles Port has loading and unloading business in Busan port and Oakland port, then Shanghai Port, Busan port, Oakland port and Los Angeles Port are all connected ports.

04. Shared shipping Company

Colocation means that shipping companies jointly operate ships, mutually charter ships, exchange or share shipping space in the maritime alliance formed. Simply speaking, it is on this route, which several shipping companies jointly out of the ship.

The essence of cabin sharing is that in order to reduce the probability of empty cabins, shipping companies will jointly use a ship to improve the full load rate. Each shipping company owns a portion of the space.

05. Voyage

Voyage refers to the period during which a ship completes a transport and production task in operation.

In practice, the voyage generally starts from the completion of unloading at the destination port, after loading, and ends at the completion of unloading at the new destination port. The time experienced by a voyage is called the voyage time.

Both owners and forwarders need detailed knowledge of shipping schedules to plan and manage the handling, transportation and delivery of goods.

The shipping date is generally made by the shipping company according to the market conditions. However, for shippers and freight forwarders, due to some uncertain factors in sea transportation, the shipping date is often delayed.

Common factors leading to delay in shipping

The delay is likely due to some uncontrollable factors. Take stock of several common reasons for shipping delay:

01. Weather reasons

In the event of storms, fog, typhoons, etc., the ship may deviate from its original route, which requires time to adjust its course. In the case of extremely bad storms, which have caused some damage to the ship, the delay will be even longer.

02. The ship is out of order

A technical failure of a component of the ship will prevent the ship from continuing its voyage.

If something goes wrong, the ship must be taken to a nearby port for repairs, which can take more than a month.

03. Illegal detention

Detention of the vessel may occur in case of prohibited/non-compliant cargo. Depending on the severity of the cargo violation detected, the time delay varies. Local ports, local customs authorities, and other professional services may implement inspections or fines, which can also lead to delayed delivery of the cargo.

04. Ports and terminals are congested

Seasonal phenomenon, when container ships pass through a crowded port, they generally have longer berthing and departure times. For such a situation, the shipping company will usually issue such schedule delay notice.

05. Geopolitical conflict

The recent Red Sea crisis is a prime example. Affected by geopolitical conflicts, shipping companies will avoid high-risk routes and choose to divert to safer routes, which will have the impact of reduced capacity, higher costs and port congestion, inevitably causing shipping delays.

According to data released by Sea-Intelligence, the impact of the detour caused by the Red Sea shipping crisis, especially in terms of ship reliability and average delay, is much worse than during the COVID-19 pandemic.

06. Ship collision

Due to ship collision caused by cargo damage, cargo loss, cancellation of port, etc., will lead to the delay of shipping.

07. The Strike

Port and terminal strikes have a direct delayed impact on the delivery time of goods. There have been strikes of varying degrees at many ports this year. This will inevitably lead to the suspension of port operations, affecting ships to sail.
